SPORT HALL

The sports hall project was born from the idea of joining the primary and secondary schools in a single recently redeveloped building.
The existing building had been the building where I studied, where my father and grandfather studied before me. Its demolition had a very important meaning for me, becoming the new figure that will carry out the new intervention which replaces a collective and consolidated image.
The municipal administration's idea was to demolish the building getting a new sports hall for the students, citizens and neighboring towns that do not have this public service.
Here began the idea of building that could be seen from faraway, which would establish a dialogue with the street through its permeability.
The building will be part of a quarter faraway from the ancient centre, where the buildings of the 70s have created a new urban reality, far from the ancient buildings of the small historic centers of Abruzzo.
Therefore, considering that we were far from the historic center and that there were no buildings or particular landscape conditions to deal with, we decided to keep our distance from the existing by creating a new strength, a new energy also materially.
The building has a direct dialogue with the square in front of it and becomes attractive for the entire service area, which is easily visible from the city hall, the stadium and the swimming pool.
The volume is divided in two levels, the first more permeable and trasparent (polycarbonate) and the second is more material (dark concrete).
The upper part of the building close to the parking lot is intended to be an attractive and warm place that makes semitransparency an element of curiosity and discovery, to establish a visual relationship from the outside with the activities that are carried out inside the gym.
On the front of the entrance there is also an entrance ramp and an external cover to entertain people also externally, from here it is possible to see inside the structure of the gym through the glass window on the short side of the entrance, from the ramp you enter the entrance hall of the gym.
The building will be used constantly by the children of the school during the daytime, while in the afternoon it will receive the volleyball team, for these reasons two entrances are displayed, one for the users, the main entrance for the public and the athletes it remains on the street front while the one for the students is arranged on the long side towards the school, at the level of the garden. Here the construction of a covered shelter is planned to allow the passage of children from the school even during rainy days.
During the day, polycarbonate absorbs the shadows of the surrounding trees and buildings, creating a continuously moving facade; the black concrete protects the lower part of the building and contains the play space inside it. the colored pattern enhances the internal section of the building in the lower part, and the geometric iron cover painted in white becomes a lattice that creates depth and lightness to the space.
